Repair or Replace? Deciding on an Aging Walk-In, Reach-In or Ice Machine
Not every failing unit deserves another repair, and not every old one deserves the scrap pile. A few questions get you most of the way to the right answer.

Request Service
What failed matters more than how old it is
Gaskets, fans, heaters, controls and electrical parts are inexpensive relative to the equipment, and fixing them often buys years. A failed compressor or a leaking evaporator on a very old system is a different conversation.
A rough rule of thumb
If a single repair costs a small fraction of a comparable new unit and the equipment is otherwise sound, repair usually wins. As repair estimates approach half the cost of new equipment — or the same unit keeps failing — replacing starts to make more sense.
Questions to ask your technician
- What exactly failed and why?
- Is this likely to be the only repair for a while?
- Are parts available for this model?
- What would you check on the rest of the system while you are here?
- What does repair-versus-new cost look like over three to five years?
Other factors
- Energy use of the old unit versus newer equipment
- Whether the box or cabinet itself is in good condition
- How long you can be without the equipment
- Whether the refrigerant in the system is still readily available
Get an honest assessment
We diagnose before recommending anything, explain the cause in plain language and give you a price before work begins. Sometimes the honest answer is to repair; sometimes it is to plan a replacement on your schedule instead of an emergency's.
