What's usually behind it

Safe checks before you call
- A light, even coat of frost on the outdoor coil in winter is normal — a heavy buildup that doesn't clear during a defrost cycle is not.
- Confirm the outdoor unit has clearance and isn't blocked by snow, mulch, or debris.
- Check the thermostat is set to Heat (not Emergency Heat, which bypasses the heat pump).

Why does my heat pump blow cool air in winter?
Heat pump air is naturally cooler than a furnace's, but if the house isn't warming up, check for a stuck reversing valve, low refrigerant, or the system stuck in defrost.
Is heavy ice on my heat pump normal?
A light frost is normal in cold, humid weather and clears during scheduled defrost cycles. Heavy ice that doesn't clear points to a defrost-control or reversing-valve fault.
