How often

Manufacturers commonly call for cleaning and sanitizing at least twice a year, and more often in heavy-use or hard-water locations. Check your manual; it will name the cleaner, the contact time and the steps.

Why scale matters

Hard water leaves mineral deposits on the evaporator. Scale insulates the plate, so the machine freezes more slowly, produces thin or cloudy cubes and works harder. In Charlotte-area water, a filter and a regular descale go a long way.

What a cleaning visit covers

  • Descaling the water path and evaporator
  • Sanitizing the bin, scoop holder and interior surfaces
  • Checking the water filter and supply
  • Cleaning the condenser on air-cooled machines
  • Checking drains, float and sensors

Warning signs

Slimy film or pink residue in the bin, off tastes or odors, ice that is cloudy or soft, slow production and water on the floor are all reasons to schedule service. Never serve ice from a machine you suspect is contaminated.

Day-to-day habits

  • Use the scoop, never a glass
  • Keep the scoop out of the bin between uses
  • Leave airflow space around air-cooled machines
  • Change water filters on schedule
