Request Service
Start at the thermostat
Confirm it is set to Cool, with the setpoint a few degrees below the room temperature, and the fan on Auto. A thermostat with weak batteries can behave oddly.
Check the filter
A clogged filter restricts airflow, which weakens cooling and can ice the indoor coil. If the filter is gray and matted, swap in a fresh one of the right size.
Look outside
- Is the outdoor unit running and the fan spinning?
- Is it surrounded by leaves, mulch or debris? Clear them
- Has the outdoor breaker or disconnect tripped?
Look at the vents
Warm air from the vents with the outdoor fan running can mean the system is low on refrigerant or the coil is iced. If you see ice on the indoor unit or refrigerant lines, turn the system off at the thermostat and let it thaw before the visit.
What not to do
- Do not keep resetting a breaker that keeps tripping
- Do not open panels or touch electrical components
- Do not run the system for hours with ice on the coil
When to call
If the filter is clean, the outdoor unit is clear and the house still will not cool, a technician needs gauges and electrical testing. Many AC failures turn out to be one inexpensive part, such as a capacitor or contactor.
