Request Service
Thermostat first
Set it to Heat, with the setpoint several degrees above room temperature. If the display is blank, try fresh batteries.
Power and the switch
Furnaces usually have a power switch on or near the unit that looks like a light switch, and a breaker in the panel. Make sure both are on.
Airflow
A dirty filter can make a furnace overheat and shut itself off. Check the filter and swap in a clean one if it is clogged. Make sure supply and return vents are open and unblocked.
If you smell gas
Leave the house immediately, do not use switches or phones inside, and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside. This is the one situation where you do not troubleshoot.
Signs to stop and call
- The furnace starts, runs briefly and shuts off repeatedly
- Banging, scraping or burning smells
- A pilot or igniter that will not stay lit after a normal start
- Any soot or yellow flame
What a technician checks
Ignition components, the flame sensor, the blower, safety switches and the control board — one of which is usually behind a no-heat call.
