How to Clean a Reach-In Condenser Coil (and When Not To)
If you only do one thing for your reach-ins, clean the condenser. A grease-matted coil makes the compressor work harder, run hotter and fail sooner.

Before you start
- Turn the unit off and unplug it
- Find the condenser — usually behind a grille at the top or bottom front
- Have a soft brush, a vacuum with a brush attachment and a flashlight
The steps
Remove the grille. Brush the fins gently in the direction they run, and vacuum the dislodged dust and lint as you go. Check the fan blade and motor area, and wipe any grease with a degreaser approved for the surface — never spray liquids into electrical components.
Replace the grille, plug the unit back in and watch it run for a few minutes.

- Use a pressure washer or compressed air that bends fins
- Scrape the coil with a screwdriver
- Spray water near electrical parts
When to call us instead
If the coil is caked with grease that will not brush off, the fan is not turning, the unit trips its breaker, or the cabinet is still warm after cleaning, the problem is deeper. A technician can clean the coil properly and test the fan, start components and sealed system.
How often
Monthly is a good rule in a busy kitchen; weekly if the unit sits near fryers or in a bakery.
