Signs of a Refrigerant Leak in Commercial Refrigeration

By Roxly Appliance & Refrigeration Repair · Charlotte, NC

A system does not use up refrigerant; if it is low, it leaked. Finding the leak is the repair — recharging alone just resets the clock.

What you may notice

  • Box taking longer to pull down, or never reaching temperature
  • Frost on only part of the evaporator coil
  • Oily residue at joints, valves or fittings
  • Compressor running long with weak cooling
  • Low-pressure alarms or lockouts
  • Repeated recharges

Why topping off is a poor fix

Adding refrigerant without finding the leak hides the symptom for a while, then the system loses it again. Meanwhile the compressor runs hot and low on oil return, which shortens its life.

How a leak is found

Technicians combine electronic detection, bubble solution, visual inspection for oil and, where appropriate, pressure testing sections of the system. The leak is repaired, the system evacuated and recharged to specification, and performance verified.

What owners can do

  • Report oil stains and unusual frost early
  • Keep service records so recharges are visible
  • Do not let anyone add refrigerant without a leak search

Handling refrigerant

Refrigerant should only be handled by trained and certified technicians using proper recovery equipment. If you suspect a leak, call; do not attempt to fix piping yourself.
