Refrigerator Not Cooling: Fridge Warm, Freezer Cold, or Both Warm
A warm refrigerator is rarely random. The pattern — which compartment is warm, whether the compressor runs, whether there is frost — usually points to one of three systems.

Fridge warm, freezer cold
This points to airflow. The evaporator fan or the damper that sends cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator section is not doing its job, often because of frost blocking the path. A defrost failure is a common root cause.
Both compartments warm, compressor silent
Check the power first, then the condenser fan and start components. A refrigerator whose compressor will not start is usually a start relay or overload issue, not a dead compressor.
Both warm, compressor running constantly
Look at the condenser coils, usually behind the kick plate or at the back. Pet hair and dust can choke them. If they are clean, a sealed-system issue may be involved and a technician should look.
Safe checks
- Confirm the temperature dial or display is set correctly
- Make sure vents inside are not blocked by packed food
- Vacuum the condenser coils if accessible
- Check the door gaskets seal all the way around
Food safety
Refrigerated food is generally considered at risk once it has been above 40°F for around four hours. When in doubt, keep the doors closed to hold the cold and prioritize a repair.
When to call
If frost is heavy, the compressor will not start or the unit is still warm after the basic checks, schedule service — the sooner the better, for the food's sake.
