Safe checks before you call
- Swap in a fresh air filter if it hasn't been changed recently.
- Confirm the thermostat is set to Heat and the setpoint is above room temperature.
Beyond these basics, leave refrigerant, gas, and internal electrical components to a technician.
Frequently asked questions
Is a burning smell from my furnace dangerous?
A brief dusty smell on the season's first run is normal. A persistent or strong burning smell is not — turn the system off and call for service.
Why is heat uneven between rooms?
Uneven heating often points to blocked vents, a failing blower, or duct airflow issues rather than the furnace itself. A technician can trace where the airflow is being lost.
Why won't my furnace turn on at all?
Start with the thermostat setting, the power switch near the furnace, and the breaker. Beyond that it's typically an igniter, flame sensor, or control board fault that needs a technician.
